Job Summary
The incumbent is the senior Locally Employed Staff (LES) in the Political Unit in the Political and Economic Section. The incumbent supports the Section and the Front Office on the full range of political reporting, contact development, and other work needed to advance U.S. interests in Sweden and is the Embassy’s senior LES expert on domestic political developments in Sweden. The incumbent acts independently on instructions from Washington, advancing USG policy interests under general supervision of the Political Unit Chief, coordinating his or her work as appropriate with the Political Officer.
The incumbent further performs independent research and analysis, provides policy recommendations, and drafts substantive reports on political issues, with a particular focus on Domestic Politics, Counterterrorism, Countering Violent Extremism, Migration and Integration issues, Human Rights, Cyber Security, Countering Disinformation and Malign Influence, and Sweden’s engagements with the OSCE. The incumbent develops and maintains a wide range of contacts related to Section interests with both working level and senior officials. Other responsibilities include drafting the annual Human Rights Report and the annual Counter Terrorism Report. The incumbent backs up the Section’s Political Assistant and Economic Specialist as needed.
Essential qualifications
Requirements:
EXPERIENCE: 3 years of progressively responsible experience in political analysis and research plus two years of experience with Swedish politics and government.
Education Requirements: Bachelor degree in Political Science or International Relations is required
LANGUAGE: Fluent Speaking/Reading/Writing English is required.
Fluent Speaking/Reading/Writing Swedish is required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to develop and maintain a range of working and senior-level contacts in governmental and other relevant circles. Ability to carry out complex research projects and to prepare precise and accurate factual and analytical reports. Ability to interpret political events and their significance. Ability to develop and maintain contacts and to acquire sensitive information. Communication is vital to this position and inter-personal skills of great importance.
